Youths in Enugu vows to make it ungovernable- Nigeria NewsToday
Nigeria Newspapers – Youths of Umuezeani community in the Amaeke-Ngwo Local Government Area of Enugu State on Saturday threatened to make the state ungovernable if the management of Nigerian Breweries failed to relocate the company.The youths said they would give the NB up till January 2012 to leave their land, or risk a breakdown in their operations.
The protesters, who barricaded the Enugu – Nsukka Expressway told our correspondent that the brewery was inciting some of their indigenes against them and that rather than benefit from its various corporate social responsibility services, like the cullet evacuation and palate contracts, the company was depriving them of such benefits.
Chanting war songs, they also said they were in talks with the Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice in Enugu State, Anthony Ani, to facilitate the smooth exit of the company since the company came in through the state government in 2003.
The leader of the group, Oguejiofor Ani, said Ani was from the community and would be able to advise the state government appropriately.
Efforts by our correspondent to speak with Ani were not successful as he did not pick his calls and neither did he reply messages sent to his mobile phone.
The Chairman of the community, Mr. Solomon Eze, declined comments on the matter, saying, “I will speak next week.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Ebere Amaraizu, however confirmed the protest.
He said, “This issue between Nigerian Breweries and Umuezeani community has been on for a long time. Whenever we think it has subsided, it reoccurs. It has even become too violent. We have already launched investigations and we hope to come out with our findings soon.”
